Work with us

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) takes research from the lab to the marketplace, where it can enhance people's lives and address some of the world's pressing challenges.

With 12 research centres covering key disciplines and technologies, we:

  • strive for research excellence
  • engage with ecosystems that bring together scientific knowledge, innovation support and industrial capabilities
  • help companies grow and scale up
  • develop the people and skills that will drive the next decades of discovery

We can work with you to develop new knowledge and technologies, test your ideas in one of our facilities, and through our extensive network across Canada, connect to Canadian companies that are part of our Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) and beyond. Canadian organizations may also receive support from Global Affairs Canada.

International research and technology organizations

The NRC's international strategy includes international reputation building with peer organizations to ensure Canada and the NRC are known and viewed as a preferred science and innovation partner.

Through the Research and Technology Organizations' International Network (RIN), which the NRC co-chairs, we convene informal discussions among leading RTO executives and partners for updates, sharing of insights, experiences and best practices across the globe. We also participate in studies to guide science, technology and innovation policy development through the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and RIN studies, such as the OECD-EARTO Joint Project on the Funding of RTOs.

Pursue research with us

We help researchers grow their global reach and fill infrastructure and knowledge gaps to help expand their overall capabilities.

We can help identify the right partner, open doors to world-class knowledge, and connect you to the right infrastructure. In addition, we provide advice on how to best leverage opportunities and demystify engagement processes and documentation.

We forge strong global partnerships resulting in excellent, enduring and mutually beneficial international research and development projects and relationships. We have two international gateways to the NRC, one in Germany and one in Japan, for researchers and businesses interested in R&D collaboration with the NRC or with innovative Canadian companies.

Our goal is to ensure value for Canadians by creating mutually beneficial international partnerships through enhancing the NRC's reputation as a first-class R&D organization and our connections to trusted leading researchers and organizations.

Partner with international small and medium-sized enterprises

If you are a small or medium-sized enterprise outside of Canada, we can work with you to develop new technologies, given our broad spectrum of research capabilities within the NRC and our extensive network across Canada. We can link you to excellent academic partners and innovative companies developing solutions to your problems.

Canadian small to medium-size companies interested in collaborations should contact our National Research Council Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP).

Please consult our calls for proposals and programs

As Canada's National Office for the Eureka network, we are the first point of contact for Canadian innovators seeking access to global value chains and foreign markets through transnational collaborations with one or more of Eureka's more than 40 member countries.

Through Eureka, the NRC can connect you to national programs and potential partners and opportunities. Funding for Eureka projects is available to small and medium-sized businesses through NRC IRAP.

Study with us

The NRC offers students a challenging and intellectually stimulating environment, while providing students with the ability to grow their skills outside the classroom. We are committed to pursuing and pushing students to reach their full potential with our state-of-the-art technologies and access to superior equipment, facilities and expertise.

A partnership with RWTH Aachen University, the NRC and Mitacs that began in 2021 allows 25 students to conduct combined research stays at a Canadian partner university participating in the program. The placements are jointly funded by the NRC, Mitacs and RWTH and can be from 6 to 12 months long.

The NRC also offers a number of student and research programs, including opportunities for international students, ranging from research associates to post-doctoral fellows.
