The committees of the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC) are currently finalizing updates to the National Building, Fire, and Plumbing Codes, and the National Energy Code for Buildings. The next editions are anticipated to be available in December 2021.
While expected to be available early next year, the publication timing for the updated National Model Codes has been extended due to a number of factors, including: the complexity of the proposed changes; a significant volume of comments received from the public review; the COVID-19 pandemic, and at the request of provinces and territories to receive all four model code documents concurrently.
The CCBFC, in collaboration with the provinces and territories, continues to work on addressing feedback from the fall 2019 and winter 2020 public review processes, to ensure that all comments are carefully considered.
Current provincial and territorial building, energy, and safety regulations will remain in effect until the next edition of the codes is adopted by the provincial or territorial authority having jurisdiction. For enquiries about code adoption or enforcement in your jurisdiction, please contact your province or territory.
The upcoming editions of the National Model Codes will continue to be available for free in electronic format and at a discounted price for print formats.
