From smart testing to global leadership: A made-in-Canada innovation journey

In a world driven by software, one of the greatest hurdles in digital transformation has become testing complex, configurable systems. From connected cars to smart factories, today's embedded systems must work flawlessly across a dizzying array of variables. And Canadian tech leader mobileLIVE Inc. is rising to the challenge.

Headquartered in Toronto, mobileLIVE is a homegrown success story in digital innovation. Since 2010, the firm has grown from a boutique consultancy into a trusted technology partner for major brands. With expertise in automation, cloud computing, AI and data analytics, the company is redefining how enterprises build and scale digital services.

But as client demands evolved, so did the challenges. Testing increasingly complex systems became more and more time consuming, and unsustainable—especially across the fragmented Android ecosystem and the high degree of product variation in the automotive and manufacturing sectors. MobileLIVE needed a smarter, faster and more scalable testing solution to keep pace with client demand and in the face of global competition.

The challenge

MobileLIVE set its sights on building a next-generation testing platform that could automatically manage the testing of thousands of product configurations, known as variant testing, using AI, semantic modelling, and natural language processing.

To realize this ambitious vision—and compete globally—the company needed more than internal expertise and R&D capacity. It needed access to international best practices, collaborative R&D partnerships, and strategic support in order to scale its innovation.

And that's where the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) became a key enabler.

How we helped

MobileLIVE Inc. took on a central role in the Excellence in Variant Testing (XIVT) project—an ambitious, multi-year, $19 million international research and development (R&D) collaboration involving 24 partners across five countries. As part of the Eureka Network ITEA Cluster, the project aimed to transform how embedded systems are tested in variant-rich environments, such as those found in automotive, manufacturing, and telecom sectors.

Over the course of this initiative, mobileLIVE received a range of advisory services and support that contributed to key milestones in its innovation journey:

Strategic guidance

Supported the company's transition from consulting-based services to product innovation, leading to the development of its first enterprise software platform for automated variant testing.

Growth and scale-up support

(through Canada's Accelerated Growth Service)
Helped mobileLIVE forge connections with key growth partners and participate in the Business Development Bank of Canada's Growth Driver Program, resulting in a comprehensive strategic plan and broader market reach.

International collaboration advisory services

enabled mobileLIVE's participation in the ITEA Project Outline (PO) Days in Germany, where the company formed strong international partnerships and assembled a transnational R&D consortium.

The company's participation in this global collaboration was an important strategic move for mobileLive. It provided the company with access to leading-edge research and international best practices in model-based test automation—critical to advancing their technical capabilities and keeping pace with emerging markets.

Working closely with partners across Europe, mobileLIVE was able to accelerate its innovation, refine its test orchestration frameworks and validate its technology across different sectors, including retail, logistics, telecommunication and the Internet of Things (IoT).

As a result of this collaboration, mobileLIVE successfully developed a market-ready enterprise edition of its platform and expanded into new international markets. The company unlocked new revenue streams, created high-skilled jobs in Canada, and positioned itself at the forefront of intelligent testing solutions for complex, software-driven systems.

This journey demonstrates how a Canadian company—through focused R&D, strategic collaboration, and global engagement—can deliver solutions that respond to real-world industry challenges, while helping strengthen Canada's innovation ecosystem.

"Our collaboration through NRC IRAP support and ITEA participation has accelerated our innovation in ways we couldn't have achieved alone. It's helped us move beyond Canadian borders, validate our technology on the global stage, and showcase what Canadian tech can do."

(Jahan Ali - Founder and CEO - mobileLIVE)
