Government organizations are required to keep records of work and decisions to ensure transparency, accountability, efficiency and continuity of service and to maintain public trust. During his eight-month co-op term, David Brown played an important role in supporting record digitization with the information management (IM) solutions team and the IM policy and advisory services team at the NRC.

"Handling information properly is very important in today's world, especially with technology evolving quickly and so many people generating vast amounts of data every day," says David. "Without strong IM practices, valuable knowledge can be lost and personal data can be compromised."

In his role, David coordinated the digitization of NRC records by using a computer markup language to upload open access publications onto the NRC Publications Archive repository. He also responded to client requests about using digital tools such as DocZone, an internal digital repository and collaborative authoring tool, and promoted effective information management practices. He developed user guides and helped deliver training materials and information management services for employees.

"My time working at a leading research organization like the NRC has shown me first-hand how information management is crucial not only for organizing, preserving and accessing information but also for protecting sensitive data, enabling informed decision making and ensuring accountability," David says.

As a member of 2 teams, David was able to enjoy both working on projects independently and collaborating with team members and clients on information management solutions.

In addition to carrying out his daily tasks and responsibilities, David took advantage of other benefits of working at the NRC. When he first joined, he had the opportunity to tour various facilities, including the National Science Library, which houses 4 rare books by the renowned scientist Galileo. He also attended the AccelerateGov conference in Ottawa with his supervisor, Andrea Lemieux, where he engaged with experts from around the world to explore strategies for digital transformation in the public service.

"David brought enthusiasm and creativity to both his teams. His eagerness to learn and ability to work well with others were key to helping us drive important initiatives forward," Andrea says.

David is currently pursuing his master's degree in information studies at the University of Ottawa. After completing his education, he plans to pursue a career in information management.
