When Vancouver, B.C.'s Zymeworks Inc. opened its doors in 2003, the biotherapeutics company was determined to address a need in the pharmaceutical and chemical markets that was not being served by the existing approaches to protein simulation and engineering. Committed to developing best-in-class antibody and protein therapeutics for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, Zymeworks set out to create a platform that was commercially relevant and that reflected the most recent advances in protein biochemistry and computing architecture.

In 1965, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson tasked NRC with selecting and precisely defining the red colour of the flag. The late Dr. Gunter Wyszecki recommended and defined two limit standards for the red colour, which were measured on a General Electric Hardy spectrophotometer, using an NRC-developed standard procedure. NRC pioneered the first application of the Standard Colorimetric System of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) to specify the colour of a national emblem making Canada and Canadian industry a leader in the measurement of colour and optical properties of materials.

By the late 1990s, Canadian Ice Service (CIS) identified the urgent need for a new forecasting model that could meet the requirements of modern operations. The National Research Council (NRC) undertook a research effort aimed at developing a reliable iceberg drift forecasting model in collaboration with CIS, academia and private consultants.
