Quantum Safe Technologies Initiative

Program duration: 2026-2028

Quantum computers could one day break encryption systems that protect our digital information. This would let attackers expose sensitive financial, military or health data using a "harvest now, decrypt later" approach. They could also forge digital signatures to impersonate trusted systems and compromise blockchain or Internet of Things security.

These breaches would threaten critical infrastructure, destabilize national security, jeopardize data privacy and disrupt essential services by compromising digital identities and communication networks.

Launching in 2026, the NRC’s Quantum Safe Technologies Initiative will focus on emerging cybersecurity threats linked to quantum computing. We will develop quantum-safe applications to strengthen the security of Canada’s critical sectors, including defence, finance, telecommunications, health and transportation.

About the initiative

The Quantum Safe Technologies Initiative will:

  • Develop and test post‑quantum cryptography applications and protocols to reinforce the security of Canada’s critical infrastructure
  • Create testing and evaluation frameworks to support post‑quantum cryptography applications across government and industry
  • Support the design of quantum‑safe communication systems and hybrid quantum‑classical networks
  • Strengthen Canada’s quantum‑safe innovation ecosystem through collaboration with other government departments ensuring coordinated national action on quantum security
  • Build national capacity and expertise by training highly qualified personnel in quantum-safe cybersecurity solutions

Areas of focus

The initiative will focus on:

  • Advancing research and development of quantum‑resilient cryptographic applications
  • Supporting the testing and integration of post-quantum cryptography into critical systems
  • Building Canadian capacity through training, awareness and partnership initiatives
