In September 2019, the Tŝilhqot'in National Government's language department began a project to expand its language database of audio recordings and transcriptions, extend its suite of language applications, and build language technology and transcription capability in the community.
The project gave several young Tŝilhqot'in a chance to work with elders and language experts on language revitalization, gaining priceless exposure to their ancestral language on the job, as well as the opportunity to start a career in an information or language technologies field. The team significantly advanced the community's language technology assets, and shared their experience with others who may be interested in similar initiatives.
The work was supported in part by the NRC's Indigenous Languages Technology Project.
