Multimedia Analytic Tools for Security program

In today's digital world, the ability to quickly and efficiently make sense out of big data is a critical component of the intelligence and decision cycle for most organizations. The Multimedia Analytic Tools for Security program brings together end-users and industry partners to research and develop analytics software to help find critical information with greater precision and speed.

The software algorithms and prototypes developed within the program will enable Canadian national security agencies and public safety organizations to rapidly increase their analysis and data surveillance capacity by improving productivity and accessing the untapped potential of their data and sensors.

Collaborate with us

We collaborate with:

  • intelligence, security, and health agencies
  • industry leaders in intelligence analysis and data analytics
  • systems integrators
  • software and hardware partners
  • other partners according to needs

Collaborators will gain a competitive advantage in the international security market, including access to advanced technologies for new products, advanced expertise, and testing under real‑world conditions. They will also benefit from reduced risk in the early stage of new technology development, to better deploy innovative and competitive products in the global marketplace.

End users benefit by having a voice in the development of future technologies and from next‑generation tools and products that will enable them to keep pace with today's information analysis demands.

Technical advisory services

Program collaborators can access the following world-leading technical and advisory services and facilities:

Technologies developed within the program will be applicable to other sectors outside defence and security that require advanced analytic capabilities, such as healthcare, education, business intelligence and language translation.

Global Public Health Intelligence Network

The Global Public Health Intelligence Network (GPHIN), headquartered at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), is an early warning system used to identify potential public health threats worldwide, including outbreaks such as avian influenza and SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).

Between 2016 and 2018, PHAC commissioned the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to build the replacement multilingual text analytics software application for the GPHIN system. Under the contract, the NRC replaced the previous legacy GPHIN software application with an integrated suite of tools completed to specifications.

The NRC maintains the GPHIN software application as part of ongoing technical service but does not play a role in decisions made regarding public health threats.

For more information about GPHIN, please visit the Public Health Agency of Canada.
