Across Canada, there are many people living in rural and remote communities who have limited to no access to the internet. This prevents them from accessing every day, ordinary services such as education, healthcare, e-commerce and entertainment. The Government of Canada understands that high speed internet access is a critical infrastructure element in modern Canadian society. Our High-throughput and Secure Networks Challenge program will develop innovative technologies to deliver affordable, high-speed and secure broadband services to rural and remote communities anywhere in Canada. Working with our partners, we will create technologies enabling the implementation of next generation high-speed, reliable and secure telecommunication networks, using technologies such as advanced photonics, optical satellite communications, quantum encryption and distributed precise timing.
