50-year history supporting Canada's Olympic athletes - Transcript
Hundredths of a second. That's what makes a difference between a gold and a silver medal at the Olympics and that's where aerodynamics kicks in. The NRC supported the Canadian athletes for the last 50 years. It all started in the 1970's with the crazy Canucks; the team for alpine skiers that came in the wind tunnel. And then in the 80's we have helped ski jumping, bobsleigh, just before the Olympics that were in Calgary.
During the last four years leading to the next Olympics in Pyeongchang, the National Research Council has helped four different sports: alpine skiing, long track speed skating, luge and also ski-cross Canada. For all those sports we have done a lot of testing to try to optimize the aerodynamics by reducing the drag. One thing that we have done is to develop the speed skating suit by playing on different fabrics to help reduce the drag with different textures and porosity and I'm proud to say that I'm helping all the Canadian athletes to reach their maximum potential at the Olympics.
