Finding and advancing treatments for cancer is a key area of research for teams at the Human Health Therapeutics Research Centre. Our researchers are working to develop and advance a range of biologic treatments targeting different types of cancer.
Traditional chemotherapy and radiation have been effective in controlling cancer, especially when it's detected early. However, these treatments often damage healthy cells in the process of killing off the cancer cells, leading to debilitating side effects and reduced quality of life for patients.
Biologics, on the other hand, focus specifically on destroying cancer cells, leaving healthy cells intact. This makes biologics an efficient and effective treatment option that also avoids unwanted side effects of chemotherapy and radiation such as nausea, fatigue and hair loss.
Our researchers work with clients and collaborators from industry, academia and government to develop and advance important tools:
- Novel immunotherapies that recognize, bind to and kill off specific cancer cells
- Tools and technology platforms and processes to manufacture these therapies in a cost-effective manner
- Biological markers that can help improve patient outcome and identify patients that can best benefit from the treatment
