Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre facility expansion

In Budget 2021, the Government of Canada announced an investment of $90 million in the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC) to upgrade equipment and expand its space. An additional $25 million was later provided through the NRC facilities renewal program. These investments will help increase the CPFC's capacity as North America's only end-to-end pure play wafer fabrication facility and improve its ability to meet both Canadian and global demand.

As part of this modernization, the NRC is expanding the facility to improve key processes for next-generation optical components, address growing demand and replace outdated equipment. This will allow the CPFC to better support its clients.

Construction on a new 8,000 square-foot building started in September 2023. This expansion will increase the CPFC's clean room space, which will, in turn, increase capacity and capabilities and support the NRC's green initiatives. The new building will also have space for up to two new commercial-scale metal-organic chemical vapor deposition reactors for more advanced epitaxial growth projects.

During construction, the CPFC remains open, with no impact on operations or client deliverables.
