Novel Materials for Clean and Sustainable Energy Challenge Program

 

This program will focus on the development of new materials that will be used in the production of clean and sustainable energy. Our goal is to support the development of affordable and cost‑competitive alternatives that will help Canada meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

Collaborators

We invite researchers at Canadian and international universities, colleges, centres of excellence and highly innovative firms with expertise in the current areas of focus below to express their interest in collaborating with NRC researchers.

Current areas of focus

Possible directions for the program cover a wide range of clean energy approaches, which will be narrowed through discussions with potential collaborators:

  • Producing hydrogen at an industrial scale, at a competitive cost, and without CO2 emissions
  • Converting captured CO2 into fuel

Functional materials that support these approaches include the following:

  • Catalysts
  • Electrodes
  • Electrolytes
  • Membranes
  • Nanomaterials

Engagement

  • December 6, 2018: One‑day workshop on energy materials in Ottawa, Ontario hosted by the NRC (completed)
  • Early-2019: Small‑group follow‑up discussions with stakeholders (ongoing)

Contribution funding

The program will contribute to collaborative research and development activities by academic institutions and small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in support of the program's objectives.

The program may provide contributions to early investments by collaborators in equipment needed for research in fundamental areas.

Benefitting from the NRC's multi‑disciplinary expertise, investments will build discovery platforms aimed at accelerating the development of the novel materials needed to produce clean and sustainable energy:

  • Equipment for the computational design of materials
  • Equipment for the synthesis of materials and their integration into components
  • Equipment to support the characterization of materials and their behaviour

The program will make further investments in research by academic and SME collaborators over the course of the 7‑year program lifespan.
