Andrew Johnston

Director General (Acting) Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre

Dr. Andrew Johnston is the Acting Director General of the NRC's Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre.

Dr. Johnston joined the NRC in 1997 as a research officer with the Institute for Aerospace Research—now known as the Aerospace Research Centre—where he first led R&D activities in the aerospace polymer composites field.

He then held a number of research and leadership roles for the Aerospace and other research centres, including acting as the leader of the Security Materials Technology program.

In 2017, as a principal research officer, Dr. Johnston joined the team responsible for establishing the NRC's Advanced Materials Research Facility in Mississauga, becoming Acting Director, Research and Development, for the facility in 2020.

Dr. Johnston holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and a Ph.D. in Metals and Materials Engineering from the University of British Columbia. He is author or co‑author of over 140 publications and technical reports in the area of advanced materials.
