Roles and responsibilities
Raman is a Senior Data Scientist in the NRC's Data Analytics Centre, part of the NRC's Digital Technologies Research Centre. He plays a leading role in client interactions, project execution, and in the training and mentoring of data scientists. He joined the NRC and its newly created Data Analytics Centre (DAC) shortly after its inception as a senior data scientist following a 13-year career with Defence Research and Development Canada as a defence scientist. He has a strong mathematics background, with significant experience in statistical learning techniques, operations research, mathematical programming, and machine learning. These days, he focuses his efforts on leading revenue projects for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) through the development of analytics and AI products to help them achieve their business goals. In this work, he employs various supervised and unsupervised machine learning, statistical analysis and predictive modeling techniques to deliver business insights to clients and potential clients.
He’s had the opportunity to work on a variety of short- and medium-term projects for clients spanning the gamut of domains, including: forecasting milk production at dairy farms in Newfoundland and PEI; determining predictors influencing rail comfort for VIA Rail; predicting when and how donors should be contacted to maximize their contributions to various charities; and forecasting demand (and potential shortfalls) for various prescription medication at Ontario pharmacies; among others.

Previous work experience
Senior Defence Scientist
Canadian Joint Operations Command Operational Research & Analysis Team, DND
June 2011 - August 2017
- Conducted data analysis studies in support of the Command using a variety of analytic techniques (including statistical learning, regression and classification, clustering, mathematical programming and optimization, data visualization, and geospatial analysis). Developed the team’s work programme in a leadership capacity through regular interactions with military general officers. Provided scientific leadership to the team, and guidance to junior team members. Supervised several technical contracts. Published analyses in numerous internal technical reports and conference proceedings, and disseminated actionable results to decision-makers through oral presentations.
Defence Scientist
Directorate Materiel Group Operational Research, DND
July 2007 - June 2011
- Conducted operational research studies applied to inventory management, acquisition of major defence assets, and strategic ammunition stockpiles. Research included the processing of large data sets and its subsequent analysis using multi-objective optimization, mathematical programming, discrete-event simulation, and inventory modelling techniques. Supervised co-op students and visiting post-doctoral fellows, providing technical guidance and direction. Assisted in the supervision of a technical contract.
Defence Scientist
Land Forces Operational Research Team, DND
August 2004 - July 2007
- Conducted operational research and analysis in support of the Canadian Army, mainly using statistical methods and discrete-event simulation.
