[CCMC evaluation requirements] CSA A123.22-08, Type I
From: National Research Council Canada
This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.
Criteria document
Number | CSA A123.22-08, Type I |
Title | Self-Adhering Polymer Modified Bituminous Sheet Materials Used as Steep Roofing Underlayment for Ice Dam Protection |
Document | Standard |
Publisher | CSA Group |
Scope
These evaluations apply to polymer modified bituminous sheet materials intended for use as underlayment on roof eaves, valleys, or both, to prevent water leakage for shingle, tile and/or metal roofs from water back-up due to ice dams. These underlayment sheets have a sticky adhesive layer which is exposed by removing a protective sheet. The membranes can be internally or surface-reinforced to provide mechanical strength. The top surface is suitable to work on during the application of the roofing.
The standard describes two classifications of membranes, which must be supplied in rolls in the following types:
- Type I - Standard ice dam underlayment; or
- Type II - High-temperature ice dam underlayment.
The following evaluation criteria is for Type I products
Material requirements
The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):
Property | Unit | Requirement |
---|---|---|
Thickness | mm | ≥ 1.0 |
Maximum load (longitudinal and transverse) | kN/m | ≥ 4.4 |
Elongation at break of modified bitumen portion | % | ≥ 10 |
Adhesion to plywood at 4°C | kgf/30.5 cm | ≥ 0.92 |
Adhesion to plywood at 23°C | kgf/30.5 cm | ≥ 5.44 |
Thermal stability (45° angle for 14 days at 70°C) | mm | ≤ 3 |
Flexibility temperature | °C | ≤ –29 (no signs of cracking) |
Tear resistance (longitudinal and transverse) | N | ≥ 89 |
Moisture vapour permeance | ng/(Pa·s·m2) | ≤ 5.7 |
Sealability around nail | – | Dry (no water is presented) |
Waterproof integrity after low temperature flexibility | – | Dry (no water is presented) |
Waterproof integrity of lap seam | – | Dry (no water is presented) |
Slip resistance | – | Greater than asphalt saturated felt when tested under the same conditions of temperature and wetness |
Unrolling property | – | The underlayment sheet shall not crack nor be so sticky as to cause tearing or other damage upon being unrolled at material temperatures between 4.4°C and 60°C. |

Installation requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:
- do not contravene the National Building Code of Canada, or any provincial or territorial building codes; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Manufacturing requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:
- is operated under a documented quality system; and
- meets the minimum requirements of the CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Additionally, the rolls must be securely wrapped or banded in a substantial manner to prevent shifting of material and to permit normal handling.
Labelling requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:
- reference the associated CCMC number or mark; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Additionally, each package must be plainly marked with:
- the manufacturer’s name
- brand name
- area of the roll
- the CSA designation
Classification information
Products falling within the scope of this document are commonly classified by:
