[CCMC evaluation requirements] CGSB 37-GP-56M-1985, Type 2a, Class C, Grade 1

From: National Research Council Canada

This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.

Criteria document

Scope

These evaluations apply to a single layer of multi-ply, prefabricated, modified bituminous and reinforced membrane for roofing. The membrane can be fully adhered, partially attached, or loose-laid. The proponent has demonstrated that the product meets the requirements of CGSB 37-GP-56M-1985 (including Amendment No. 2, dated December 1985).

The standard classifies the membranes into two types, three classes and two grades of products:

  • Type 1 for exposed roofing application:
    1. fully adhered
    2. partially attached
  • Type 2 for covered roofing application:
    1. fully adhered
    2. partially attached
    3. loose laid
  • Class A - granule surfaced;
  • Class B - metallic surfaced; and
  • Class C - plain surfaced.
  • Grade 1 - standard service; and
  • Grade 2 - heavy duty service.

The following evaluation requirements are for a Type 2a, Class C, Grade 1 product

Material requirements

The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):

Material requirements
Property Unit Requirement
Breaking strength Footnote (1) N ≥ 294
Ultimate elongation (at break) Footnote (1) % ≥ 4
Load strain product ≥ 2 940
Load strain product – if the breaking strength requirement for Grade 1 membrane is not met ≥ 19 400
Water resistance water absorption g ≤ 1.0
dimensional change Footnote (1) % shall not be greater than ± 1%
Low temperature flexibility at –10°C Pass the watertightness test
Water vapour transmission g/m2 ≤ 1.0
Lap joint strength Footnote (2) after 5 days of conditioning Pass the breaking strength test and then the watertightness test
after immersion in water at 50°C for 5 days Pass the breaking strength test and then the watertightness test
after immersion in water at 50°C for 5 days followed by 5 freeze-thaw cycles Pass the breaking strength test and then the watertightness test
Crack bridging capability (500 cycles at –10°C) No evidence of cracking or splitting or loss of adhesion

Additional Information

If stated in the Listing, the proponent has provided information related to the following:

Fire classification of roof covering

The membrane was tested in accordance with the CAN/ULC S107-10, “Standard Methods of Fire Tests of Roof Coverings.”

Fire-resistance rating

The membrane used in the roofing assembly was tested in accordance with CAN/ULC S101-14, “Standard Method of Fire Endurance Tests of Building Construction and Materials.”

Wind uplift resistance of membrane roofing assemblies

The membrane used in the roofing assembly was tested in accordance with CAN/CSA-A123.21-10, “Standard Test Method for the Dynamic Wind Uplift Resistance of Membrane-Roofing Systems.”
