[CCMC evaluation requirements] CGSB 37-GP-56M-1985, Type 1a, Class A, Grade 2
From: National Research Council Canada
This document provides the material, installation, manufacturing, and labelling requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the following:
Number | CGSB 37-GP-56M-1985, Type 1a, Class A, Grade 2 |
Title | Membrane, Modified, Bituminous, Prefabricated, and Reinforced for Roofing |
Document | Standard |
Publisher | Canadian General Standards Board |
Scope
These evaluations apply to a single layer of multi-ply, prefabricated, modified bituminous and reinforced membrane for roofing. The membrane can be fully adhered, partially attached, or loose-laid. The proponent has demonstrated that the product meets the requirements of CGSB 37-GP-56M-1985 (including Amendment No. 2, dated December 1985).
The standard classifies the membranes into two types, three classes and two grades of products:
- Type 1 for exposed roofing application:
- fully adhered
- partially attached
- Type 2 for covered roofing application:
- fully adhered
- partially attached
- loose laid
- Class A - granule surfaced;
- Class B - metallic surfaced; and
- Class C - plain surfaced.
- Grade 1 - standard service; and
- Grade 2 - heavy duty service.
The following evaluation requirements are for a Type 1a, Class A, Grade 2 product
Material requirements
The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements:
Property | Unit | Requirement

Ultimate elongation (at break) Footnote (1) | % | ≥ 8
Load strain product | – | ≥ 14 700
Water resistance | water absorption | g | ≤ 1.0 |
dimensional change Footnote (1) | % | shall not be greater than ± 1%
Low temperature flexibility at –30°C | – | Pass the watertightness test
Water vapour transmission | g/m2 | ≤ 1.0
Dynamic impact (puncturing) at 4.9 J | – | Pass the watertightness test
Static puncturing | – | Pass the watertightness test
Lap joint strength Footnote (2) |
after 5 days of conditioning | – | Pass the breaking strength test and then the watertightness test |
after immersion in water at 50°C for 5 days | – | Pass the breaking strength test and then the watertightness test
after immersion in water at 50°C for 5 days followed by 5 freeze-thaw cycles | – | Pass the breaking strength test and then the watertightness test
Granule embedment - loss in mass | g | ≤ 2.0
Accelerated weathering |
cracking or blistering | – | No evidence of cracking or blistering |
breaking strength | % | ≥ 90 of the original value
elongation at break | % | ≥ 90 of the original value
Crack bridging capability (500 cycles at –30°C) | – | No evidence of cracking or splitting or loss of adhesion |
Additional information
If stated in the Listing, the proponent has provided information related to:
