[CCMC evaluation requirements] CAN/ULC-S716.1-12

From: National Research Council Canada

This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.

Criteria document

Scope

This Standard outlines requirements for Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS), used in combination with a drained air space as an exterior wall cladding system. It also outlines requirements for water resistive barrier systems (WRBs) that can be used with EIFS.

The EIFS wall cladding system is comprised of thermal insulation boards, an adhesive for attachment of the thermal insulation boards to the substrate, a glass fibre reinforcing mesh embedded in a base coat on the face of the thermal insulation boards and a finish coat.

The use of mechanical fasteners is outside the scope of this Standard, but is acceptable as a complement and/or as an alternate to adhesive for attachment where the substrate will not support adhesive attachment of the EIFS.

Note: Refer to CAN/ULC-S716.3, Annex A for further information.

In EIFS, the thermal insulation boards support the base coat with integral glass fibre reinforcing mesh. Systems where the reinforcement is the supporting element of the rendering, e.g., conventional stucco, are not covered by this Standard.

This document does not purport to address all the health and safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this Standard has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish health and safety practices, in conjunction with any existing applicable regulatory requirements, prior to its use.

Material requirements

The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):

Table 1. Technical requirements for constituent products of EIFS
Test Requirement Notes
Bond strength of adhesives to LA-WRB avg. ≥ 80 kPa Wet State
avg. ≥ 250 kPa Initial and dry state
Bond strength of adhesive to concrete block avg. ≥ 80 kPa Wet state
avg. ≥ 250 kPa Initial and dry state
Bond strength of base coat to thermal insulation board avg. ≥ 80 kPa All states
Bond strength of finish coat to base coat avg. ≥ 80 kPa All states
Water vapour permeance of the lamina There is no pass/fail criterion for the water vapour permeance of the lamina. Water vapour permeance of the lamina is included for potential hygrothermal design purposes.
Water impermeability of base coat < 90 % of surface area damp
Water absorption of base coat <  20 % avg. mass gain
Fungus resistance of finish coat No fungal growth supported
Salt spray resistance of lamina No deleterious effects visible
Ultra violet resistance of lamina No deleterious effects visible
Strength of reinforcing mesh Avg. initial strength ≥ 35 N/mm For both weft and warp
Strength of reinforcing mesh after tri-alkai solution exposure Avg. Residual strength ≥ 20 N/mm and a loss in ultimate tensile strength of not more than 50 % For both weft and warp
Strength of reinforcing mesh after cement solution exposure Avg. Residual strength ≥ 15 N/mm and a loss in ultimate tensile strength of not more than 60 % For both weft and warp
Dry thickness of the base coat There is no pass/fail criterion for the dry thickness of the base coat test. Dry thickness of the base coat is determined for verification purposes only.

Labelling requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:

Additionally, in compliance with CAN/ULC-S716.1, each container/package shall be marked with the following information, unless otherwise specified:

  • Manufacturer’s name and address;
  • Product name;
  • Product description;
  • The statement, “Complies with CAN/ULC-S716.1”;
  • Manufacturer’s lot or date code identification of the material in the container.
