[CCMC evaluation requirements] CAN/ULC-S710.1-11, Class 1
From: National Research Council Canada
This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.
Criteria document
Number | CAN/ULC-S710.1-11, Class 1 |
Title | Standard for Thermal Insulation – Bead-Applied One Component Polyurethane Air Sealant Foam, Part 1: Material Specification |
Document | Standard |
Publisher | ULC Standards |
Scope
These evaluations apply to thermal insulating, bead-applied one-component polyurethane foam. It is intended for use as an insulating air sealant for both building and non-building applications. This one-component polyurethane air sealant is pre-packaged at the factory. The continuous-use temperature is within the range of −60°C to +110°C.
The standards referenced below cover bead-applied one-component polyurethane air sealant foam, whether it is applied on a building site or in a prefabrication (manufacturing) process. These standards include test methods used to determine the material properties and provides a means of comparing different polyurethane air sealant foams. These tests are intended for use in specifications, product evaluations and quality control.
Products manufactured in conformance with CAN/ULC-S710.1-11 standard are:
- classified as Class 1 in accordance with their flame-spread value;
- installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and CAN/ULC-S710.2-11, “Standard for Thermal Insulation – Bead-Applied One Component Polyurethane Air Sealant Foam – Part 2: Installation.”
Note:
The durability of the foam is assessed as the continuity component in an air barrier system between: (i) the principal plane of air tightness (i.e., polyethylene sheet or other proprietary products specified as the designated air barrier system, and (ii) the window or door (i.e., wood, vinyl, aluminum).
Material requirements
The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):

Installation requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:
- do not contravene the National Building Code of Canada, or any provincial or territorial building codes; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Manufacturing requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:
- is operated under a documented quality system; and
- meets the minimum requirements of the CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Labelling requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:
- reference the associated CCMC number or mark; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Additionally, in compliance with the CAN/ULC-S710.1-05, each container/package must be marked with the following information:
- manufacturer’s name and address;
- product name and class;
- tested bead width;
- net mass per container;
- lot number;
- date of manufacture;
- “use before” date;
- conformance with CAN/ULC-S710.1-11; and
- reference to CAN/ULC-S710.2-11 for installation.
