[CCMC evaluation requirements] CAN/ULC-S706-09, Type 2, Class 1

From: National Research Council Canada

This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.

Criteria document

Scope

These evaluations apply to wood fibre manufactured in the form of faced or unfaced boards, sheets or panels used as insulation for floors, ceilings, walls and roofing systems, whether applied on a building site or in a prefabrication (manufacturing) facility.

Material requirements

The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):

Table 1. Thickness tolerances
Thickness of fibreboard (mm) Allowable variation (%)
9.5 ±9
11.0 ±9
12.5 ±9
20.0 ±7
25.4 ±7
38.0 ±6
51.0 ±6

Other detailed requirements

Length and width: The tolerance for the length and width of any size panel must be +0, –5 mm/m. The tolerance for Type II, Class 1 must be measured from the scant cut. The total tolerance in any dimension must not exceed 10 mm.

Maximum dimensions: The maximum dimensions for Type II, Class 1 laminated products must be 1.2 m in length and width excluding offset and vented edges.

Straight edge: Squareness of any board panel must not deviate from a right angle by an amount greater than 2 mm/m.

Installation requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:

Manufacturing requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:

Labelling requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:

In addition, CAN/ULC-S706-09 requires that packaging for the insulation be identified with the following information:

  • brand name;
  • name and address of the manufacturer;
  • type and class;
  • specified dimensions;
  • thermal resistance for applicable materials in (m2·K)/W;
  • air permeance characteristic for applicable materials in L/(s·m2) at 75 Pa pressure difference;
  • water vapour permeance for applicable materials in ng/(Pa·s·m2);
  • lot number or date code; and
  • the phrase “CAN/ULC-S706.”
