[CCMC evaluation requirements] CAN/ULC-S706-09, Type 1, Class 2
From: National Research Council Canada
This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.
Criteria document
Number | CAN/ULC-S706-09, Type 1, Class 2 |
Title | Standard for Wood Fibre Insulating Boards for Buildings |
Document | Standard |
Publisher | ULC Standards |
Scope
These evaluations apply to wood fibre manufactured in the form of faced or unfaced boards, sheets or panels used as insulation for floors, ceilings, walls and roofing systems, whether applied on a building site or in a prefabrication (manufacturing) facility.
Material requirements
The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):
Thickness of fibreboard (mm) | Allowable variation (%) |
---|---|
9.5 | ±9 |
11.0 | ±9 |
12.5 | ±9 |
20.0 | ±7 |
25.4 | ±7 |
38.0 | ±6 |
51.0 | ±6 |
Other detailed requirements
Length and width: The tolerance for the length and width of any size panel must be +0, –5 mm/m. The total tolerance in any dimension must not exceed 10 mm.
Maximum dimensions: The maximum dimensions for Type I, Class 2 laminated products must be 1.2 m in length and width excluding offset and vented edges.
Straight edge: Squareness of any board panel must not deviate from a right angle by an amount greater than 2 mm/m.
Product types | Surface burning characteristics maximum | Water vapour permeance [ng/(Pa·s·m2)] | Maximum air leakage @ 75 Pa [L/(s·m2)] | Maximum water absorption (% volume) | Maximum linear moisture expansion (%) | Thermal resistance for 25 mm (m2·°C/W) minimum |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Type I, Class 2 | n/a | n/a | n/a | 10.0 | 0.5 | 0.455 |
Thickness (mm) | Transverse load at rupture (N) minimum average | Tensile strength parallel to the surface (kPa) minimum average | Tensile strength perpendicular to the surface (kPa) minimum average | Compressive strength 10% deformation (kPa) minimum average |
---|---|---|---|---|
11.0 | 50 | 1 000 | 30 | 100 |

Installation requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:
- do not contravene the National Building Code of Canada, or any provincial or territorial building codes; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Manufacturing requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:
- is operated under a documented quality system; and
- meets the minimum requirements of the CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Labelling requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:
- reference the associated CCMC number or mark; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
In addition, CAN/ULC-S706-09 requires that packaging for the insulation be identified with the following information:
- brand name;
- name and address of the manufacturer;
- type and class;
- specified dimensions;
- thermal resistance for applicable materials in (m2·K)/W;
- air permeance characteristic for applicable materials in L/(s·m2) at 75 Pa pressure difference;
- water vapour permeance for applicable materials in ng/(Pa·s·m2);
- lot number or date code; and
- the phrase “CAN/ULC-S706.”
