[CCMC evaluation requirements] CAN/ULC-S702-09, Type 5

From: National Research Council Canada

This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.

Criteria document

Scope

These evaluations apply to mineral-fibre thermal insulation when used in unconfined spaces with slopes not exceeding 4.5:12. The standard describes 5 types of mineral-fibre insulation. These CCMC evaluations refer only to loose-fill insulation Type 5 which is defined as follows:
  • Blowing wool – loose-fill mineral-fibre insulation subdivided into nodules, suitable for manual application by means of pneumatic equipment.

Mineral-fibre thermal insulation must be installed in accordance with ULC-S702.2-10, “Mineral Fibre Thermal Insulation for Buildings, Part 2: Installation.”

Material requirements

The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):

Table 1. Physical property requirements of loose-fill mineral-fibre insulation (2009)
Test/property Requirement
Design density ≤ the limiting design density in kg/m3
Thermal resistivity ≥ 18.5 (m·k)/W
Surface-burning characteristics Flame-spread rating ≤ 25
Smoke developed classification ≤ 50
Smoulder resistance Mean mass loss ≤ 5%, mass loss of each specimen ≤ 10%
Corrosiveness Specimen corrosion ≤ control specimen
Fungi resistance Growth ≤ comparative item

Installation requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:

Manufacturing requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:

Labelling requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:

Marking

The standard requires that packaging for the insulation be identified with, as a minimum:

  • the brand name and the name of the manufacturer or supplier;
  • identification of the manufacturing facility location;
  • type of insulation and its intended use;
  • net contents of the package in kg;
  • date of manufacture or shift code;
  • thermal resistivity of the product;
  • application chart as per standard;
  • any additional information required by applicable acts and regulations;
  • any necessary user safety information;
  • statement that the product complies with the standard; and
  • a cautionary statement as follows: “Building, electrical, fire and other applicable codes shall be complied with. All heat-emitting devices, such as fuel-burning appliances, chimneys, pipes, ducts and vents to these appliances shall maintain a minimum distance of 50 mm between these devices and the insulation. Recessed light fixtures, unless designed for the purpose, shall not be installed in insulated ceilings.
