[CCMC evaluation requirements] CAN/ULC-S701.1:2017, Type 3
This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.
Criteria document
Number | CAN/ULC-S701.1:2017, Type 3 |
Title | Standard for Thermal Insulation, Polystyrene Boards |
Document | Standard |
Publisher | ULC Standards |
Scope
These evaluations apply to factory-made, rigid expanded polystyrene insulation in the form of boards with or without facings or coatings and made by moulding (EPS) or extrusion (XPS) of expandable foamed polystyrene beads. It is intended for use as a thermal insulation in building construction and other applications within a temperature range of −54°C to +75°C.
Products covered by this standard are also used for sound insulation and in prefabricated thermal insulation systems and composite panels. The performance of systems incorporating these products is not covered by the evaluations.
The following assessment criteria is for Type 3 products
Notes:
- The expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation industry subscribes to an accredited certification program as part of their quality assurance. Some listings for EPS insulation products that are published in the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) Registry are based on the participation of one of the certification organizations accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC)
- Annex B of CAN/ULC-S701.1:2017 includes requirements for flat, uncoated EPS thermal insulation boards that are to be used in exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS). Annex B forms a mandatory part of the standard.
Material requirements
The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):
Property | Unit | Requirements |
---|---|---|
Thermal resistance of a 25-mm-thick specimen | m 2·°C/W | ≥ 0.74 |
Long-term thermal resistance Footnote (1) | m 2·°C/W | ≥ 1.62 |
Water vapour permeance for a 25-mm-thick specimen | ng/(Pa·s·m 2) | ≤ 130 |
Dimensional stability | % linear change | ≤ 1.5 |
Flexural strength | kPa | ≥ 300 |
Water absorption | % by volume | ≤ 2.0 |
Compressive strength | kPa | ≥ 140 |
Limiting oxygen index | % | ≥ 24 |

Installation requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:
- do not contravene the National Building Code of Canada, or any provincial or territorial building codes; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Manufacturing requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:
- is operated under a documented quality system; and
- meets the minimum requirements of the CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Labelling requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:
- reference the associated CCMC number or mark; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Additionally, a product that meets the requirements of this standard must be marked with the following information:
- ULC standard number;
- type number;
- RSI X.XX (LTTR for XPS insulation);
- production identification number;
- name or trademark of the manufacturer; and
The product must also be marked with the warning:
“Caution: This product is combustible. A protective barrier or thermal barrier is required as specified in the appropriate building code.”
Classification information
Products falling within the scope of this document are commonly classified by:
