[CCMC evaluation requirements] CAN/ULC-S701-05, Type 1

From: National Research Council Canada

This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.

Criteria document

Scope

These evaluations are of factory made rigid expanded polystyrene insulation in the form of pipe covering and boards with or without facings or coatings made by moulding (EPS) or extrusion (XPS) of expandable polystyrene beads. They include products intended for use as thermal insulation in building construction and other applications for temperatures ranging from -54°C to + 75°C. They do not include laminated products manufactured with any type of rigid board facer including fibreboard, perlite board, gypsum board, or oriented strand board.

Products covered by these evaluations are also used for sound insulation and in prefabricated thermal insulation systems and composite panels. The performance of systems incorporating these products is not covered by the evaluation.

The following evaluation criteria is for Type 1 products

Note:

  • The expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation industry subscribes to an accredited certification program as part of their quality assurance. Some listings for EPS insulation products that are published in the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) Registry may be based on the participation of one of the certification organizations accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC)

Material requirements

The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):

Table 1. CAN/ULC-S701-05 Type 1 material properties
Property Unit Requirement
Thermal resistance of a 25-mm-thick specimen m 2·°C/W ≥ 0.65
Long-term thermal resistance (LTTR)Footnote (1) m 2·°C/W ≥ 1.73
Water vapour permeance for a 25-mm-thick specimenFootnote (2) ng/(Pa·s·m2) ≤ 300
Dimensional stability % linear change ≤ 1.5
Flexural strength kPa ≥ 170
Water absorption % by volume ≤ 6.0
Compressive strength kPa ≥ 70
Limiting oxygen index % ≥ 24

Additional information:

  • The test methods used to determine the above material properties provide a means of comparing different cellular plastic thermal insulation. They are intended for use in specifications, product evaluation and quality control. They are not intended to predict end-use product performance.
  • LTTR values for compliance are based upon 50-mm-thick product, however, as required in Clause 6.3.3.2., LTTR values shall also be reported for 25-mm and 75-mm-thick products.

Installation requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:

Manufacturing requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:

Additionally, the expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation industry subscribes to an accredited certification program as part of their quality assurance. Some assessments for EPS insulation products that are published in the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) Registry are based on certification by an accredited product certification body.

Labelling requirements

The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:

Additionally, the product must be marked with the following information:

  • type;
  • ULC standard number;
  • manufacturer's name or trademark; and
  • the associated CCMC number.

The product must also be marked with the warning:

"Caution: This product is combustible. A protective barrier or thermal barrier is required as specified in the appropriate building code."
