[CCMC evaluation requirements] CAN/CGSB-7.2-94, Type 2

From: National Research Council Canada

This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.

Criteria document

Scope

These evaluations apply to adjustable steel columns used to support beams and carport roofs. The standard covers column designs having a single tube with an adjustable screw.

Material requirements

The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):

The standard requires the following:

  • Column tubes must be made from new steel with a minimum wall thickness of 2.54 mm and coated with rust-inhibiting paint on the outside surface.
  • Columns must be used with steel bearing plates, on the top and bottom, that are not less than 89 mm × 152 mm with a thickness of 6.4 ± 0.2 mm. The steel bearing plates must also be primed with a coat of rust-inhibiting paint.
  • The minimum outside diameter of a single tube column must be 63 mm. For a telescopic double tube column, the outside diameter of the inner tube must be 63 mm and the outer tube must be 70 mm. The outside diameter of the columns must not be greater than 89 mm to permit their use in 51 mm × 100-mm frame-constructed walls (plane-finished dimension).
  • Three columns must be selected at random for testing and the maximum allowable working load capacity must be at least 36 kN with a safety factor of 2.25.

Labelling

In compliance with CAN/CGSB-7.2, each column must be labelled with the following information:

  • manufacturer’s name and address;
  • standard number: CAN/CGSB-7.2-94;
  • maximum extension (mm);
  • maximum allowable load (kN); and
  • grade and yield strength of steel;

The packaging must also be marked with the phrase “CCMC XXXXX-L,” which must be both visible and legible.
