[CCMC evaluation requirements] ASTM D6878/D6878M-11a
From: National Research Council Canada
This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.
Criteria document
Number | ASTM D6878/D6878M-11a |
Title | Standard Specification for Thermoplastic Polyolefin Based Sheet Roofing |
Document | Standard |
Publisher | ASTM International |
Scope
These evaluations apply to flexible sheet made from thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) as the principal polymer, intended for use in single-ply roofing membranes exposed to the weather. The sheet shall contain reinforcing fabrics or scrims.
The standard specifies that the membrane sheet shall be formulated from ethylene and higher alpha-olefin polymers, copolymers, and mixtures thereof, in amounts greater than 50% by weight of the total polymer content suitably compounded to satisfy the physical requirements in the specification.
Material requirements
The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):
Property | Unit | Requirement |
---|---|---|
Thickness, sheet-overall Footnote (3) | mm | ≥ 1.0 |
Thickness, coating over fabric or scrim, weathering side only | mm | ≥ 0.38 |
Breaking strength | N | ≥ 976 |
Elongation at reinforcement break | % | ≥ 15 |
Tearing strength | N | ≥ 245 |
Brittleness point | °C | ≤ –40 |
Ozone resistance (visual inspection) | n/a | no cracks |
Retention of properties after heat aging – breaking strength | % | ≥ 90 |
Retention of properties after heat aging – elongation at reinforcement break | % | ≥ 90 |
Retention of properties after heat aging – tearing strength | % | ≥ 60 |
Retention of properties after heat aging – weight change (mass) | % | ≤ ±1 |
Linear dimensional change | % | ≤ ±1 |
Water absorption (mass increase) Footnote (4) | % | ≤ ±3 |
Factory seam strength | N | ≥ 290 |
Weather resistance (visual inspection) | n/a | no cracks or crazing |
Additional information
Note: This section is for information purposes only. This section is beyond the scope of the CCMC evaluation. CCMC has not reviewed any of test results, test assemblies, systems or test components listed in this section.
If stated in the Listing, the proponent has provided information related to:
Fire classification of roof covering
The membrane was tested in accordance with CAN/ULC-S107-10, “Standard Methods of Fire Tests of Roof Coverings.”
Fire-resistance rating
The membrane used in a roofing assembly was tested in accordance with CAN/ULC-S101-14, “Standard Method of Fire Endurance Test of Building Construction and Materials.”
Wind uplift resistance of membrane-roofing assemblies
The membrane used in a roofing assembly tested in accordance with CAN/CSA-A123.21-10, “Dynamic Wind Uplift Resistance of Membrane-Roofing Systems.”

Installation requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:
- do not contravene the National Building Code of Canada, or any provincial or territorial building codes; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Manufacturing requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:
- is operated under a documented quality system; and
- meets the minimum requirements of the CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Labelling requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:
- reference the associated CCMC number or mark; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Additionally, the containers holding the rolled material must be suitably marked to show the following information:
- the name of the material;
- the product code;
- the ASTM number;
- size and/or quantity; and
- the name of the manufacturer or supplier.
