[CCMC evaluation requirements] ASTM D4637/D4637M-15, Type: II
From: National Research Council Canada
This document provides a summary of the minimum requirements imposed by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) for all evaluations based on the below criteria document. Additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary for a particular evaluation, and are detailed in the individual evaluation.
Criteria document
Number | ASTM D4637/D4637M-15, Type: II |
Title | Standard Specification for EPDM Sheet Used in Single-Ply Roof Membrane |
Document | Standard |
Publisher | ASTM International |
Scope
These evaluations apply to flexible sheet made from ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) intended for use in single-ply roofing membranes exposed to the weather. Only materials recommended by the manufacturer should be in contact with the membrane. The membrane shall be installed as per the manufacturer’s installation recommendations. The sheet may be non-reinforced, fabric- or scrim-reinforced, or fabric-backed vulcanized rubber sheet.
The sheet shall be formulated from EPDM polymers and other compounding ingredients. EPDM shall be the principal polymer used in the sheet and shall be greater than 95% of the total polymer content.
The standard classifies the membranes into three types of products:
- Type I - non-reinforced;
- Type II - scrim (or fabric) internally reinforced; and
- Type III - fabric-backed.
The following evaluation requirements are for a Type II product
Material requirements
The evaluation holder must demonstrate that the product meets the following requirements (additional requirements may be imposed by the CCMC when necessary, and are detailed in the individual evaluation):
Property | Unit | Requirements |
---|---|---|
Thickness, sheet – overall | mm | ≥ 1.016 |
Thickness, coating over scrim or fabric | mm | ≥ 0.38 |
Breaking strength | N | ≥ 400 |
Dynamic puncture resistance | – | pass @ 10 J |
Static puncture resistance | – | pass @ 25 kg |
Elongation, ultimate | % | ≥ 250 Footnote (1) |
Elongation @ fabric break, ultimate – machine direction | % | ≥ 15 |
Elongation @ fabric break, ultimate – cross direction | % | ≥ 15 |
Tearing strength | N | ≥ 45 |
Brittleness point | °C | ≤ –45 |
Ozone resistance | – | no cracks |
Heat aging – breaking strength | N | ≥ 356 |
Heat aging – elongation, ultimate | % | ≥ 200 Footnote (1) |
Heat aging – linear dimensional change | % | ≤ ± 1 |
Water absorption | mass % | ≤ +8, –2 of original Footnote (1) |
Factory seam strength | kN/m | ≥ 8.8 or sheet failure |
Weather resistance – visual inspection | – | no cracks or crazing |
Additional information
Note: This section is for information purposes only. This section is beyond the scope of the CCMC evaluation. CCMC has not reviewed any of test results, test assemblies, systems or test components listed in this section.
If stated in the Listing, the proponent has provided information related to the following:
Fire classification of roof covering
The membrane tested in accordance with CAN/ULC S107-10, “Standard Methods of Fire Tests of Roof Coverings.”
Fire-resistance rating
The membrane used in a roofing assembly tested in accordance with CAN/ULC S101-14, “Standard Methods of Fire Endurance Tests of Building Construction and Materials.”
Wind uplift resistance of membrane roofing assemblies

Installation requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders provide instructions for the installation of the product(s) that:
- do not contravene the National Building Code of Canada, or any provincial or territorial building codes; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Manufacturing requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders, at a minimum, demonstrate that the associated production process:
- is operated under a documented quality system; and
- meets the minimum requirements of the CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Labelling requirements
The CCMC requires that evaluation holders ensure that product labels:
- reference the associated CCMC number or mark; and
- meet the requirements of CCMC minimum documentation requirements.
Additionally, the sheet shall be identified on the side intended to be exposed to the weather with the following information:
- the ASTM designation number (Specification D4637) and ASTM type; and
- the name of the manufacturer or supplier.
The containers holding the product shall be suitably marked to show the following information:
- the name of the material;
- the stock and lot numbers;
- the ASTM designation number and type;
- the size and quantity as defined by the contract or order; and
- the name of the manufacturer or supplier.
