Code compliance opinion

It is the opinion of the Canadian Construction Materials Centre that the evaluated product, when used as exterior insulating sheathing for walls that will resist lateral loads caused by wind and earthquakes is constructed in accordance with the conditions and limitations stated in this evaluation, complies with the following code:

National Building Code of Canada 2015

ID Code provision Solution type
09-23-13-01-00-0-009.23.13.1. Requirements for Low to Moderate Wind and Seismic ForcesAcceptable
09-23-17-02-00-0-009.23.17.2.(1) Where wall sheathing is required for the ...Acceptable
09-25-02-02-01-i-009.25.2.2.(1)(i) Wood Fibre Insulating Boards for BuildingsAcceptable

The above opinion is based on the evaluation by the CCMC of technical evidence provided by the evaluation holder, and is bound by the stated conditions and limitations. For the benefit of the user, a summary of the technical information that forms the basis of this evaluation has been included.

Product information

Product name

SONOclimat ECO 4

Product description

The product is an insulating fibreboard panel made of 100% recyclable wood fibre conforming to CAN/ULC-S706-09, “Wood Fibre Insulating Boards for Buildings,” Type II, Class 3 or 4, Grade 1. It is manufactured in 38-mm-thick boards (which consist of three boards of 12.7 mm glued together) that are 1 220 mm wide × 2 440 mm or 2 750 mm long with an average density of 265 kg/m3 . The product is covered with an acrylic finish on two faces of the board. The product is installed as part of wall assemblies to provide exterior insulation to light-frame construction of walls in accordance with the NBC 2015.

  Conditions and limitations

The CCMC’s compliance opinion is bound by this product being used in accordance with the conditions and limitations set out below.

  • The product is permitted for use in construction where a wall assembly must resist lateral loads caused by wind and earthquakes.
  • The product applies in locations where the seismic spectral response acceleration, Sa(0.2), is not more than 0.70 and the 1-in-50 hourly wind pressure is less than 0.80 kPa.
  • The board must be fastened with common nails or screws at 150 mm on centre (o.c.) along perimeter and at 304 mm o.c. along intermediate supports penetrating a minimum 30 mm into the woodframe studs and plates.
  • The product must not be used as a finish and must always be covered by a sheathing membrane and cladding.
  • The installation of the product must be in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • The product packaging (per bundle) must be identified with:
    • the name and logo of the manufacturer; and
    • the phrase “CCMC 14123-R.”
