It is the opinion of the Canadian Construction Materials Centre that the evaluated product, when used as a sound insulating fibreboard in walls or floor separation assemblies requiring sound control in accordance with the conditions and limitations stated in this evaluation, complies with the following code:
National Building Code of Canada 2015
ID | Code provision | Solution type |
---|---|---|
09-11-01-01-00-0-00 | 9.11.1.1. Required Protection | Acceptable |
09-11-01-03-00-0-00 | 9.11.1.3. Compliance with Required Ratings | Acceptable |
09-11-01-04-00-0-00 | 9.11.1.4. Adjoining Constructions | Acceptable |
The above opinion is based on the evaluation by the CCMC of technical evidence provided by the evaluation holder, and is bound by the stated conditions and limitations. For the benefit of the user, a summary of the technical information that forms the basis of this evaluation has been included.
Product information
Product name
SONOpan IIProduct description
The product is a sound-insulating fibreboard made of wood fibre and recycled paper. It is manufactured in 19-mm-thick boards that are 1 220 mm wide × 2 440 mm or 2 740 mm long with an average density of 217 kg/m3 . The product is green and has distinctive dimples in a grid layout on both faces of the board. The product is installed as part of wall assemblies to provide sound protection from airborne noise in accordance with the NBC 2015.

Conditions and limitations
The CCMC’s compliance opinion is bound by this product being used in accordance with the conditions and limitations set out below.
- The product is permitted for use in construction where a fire-resistance rating is required for a wall assembly. Such a rating must be determined in conformance with CAN/ULC-S101, “Fire Endurance Tests of Building Construction and Materials.”
- The product is also permitted for use where a sound transmission class rating is required for wall construction. The sound transmission class rating provided in this evaluation is for information only. The apparent sound transmission class (ASTC), sound transmission class (STC), field sound transmission class (FSTC), and impact insulation class (IIC) or apparent impact insulation class (AIIC) published in this evaluation indicate that a proposed system may be able to achieve these results. The STC rating between units in buildings must be determined in accordance with ASTM E 336-11, “Measurement of Airborne Sound Attenuation between Rooms in Buildings,” or calculated and carried out in accordance with Articles 5.8.1.4., Detailed Method for Calculating ASTC, or 5.8.1.5., Simplified Method for Calculating ASTC, of Division B of the NBC 2015.
- As per Sentence 9.11.1.1.(1) of Division B of the NBC 2015, wall assemblies incorporating SONOpan II sound-insulating fibreboard that separate dwelling units from every other space in a building must have an apparent sound transmission class (ASTC) rating of at least 47 or a separating assembly providing a sound transmission class (STC) rating of at least 50 and adjoining construction that conforms to Article 9.11.1.4. of Division B of the NBC 2015.
- The recommendation for floor/ceiling assemblies that control impact noise transmission is an impact insulation class (IIC) of 55 tested on bare floors (without carpet).
- The board must be fastened in the same fashion as gypsum board, with perimeter screws 150 to 200 mm on centre (o.c.) and centre screws 450 mm o.c.
- The product must not be used as a finish and must always be covered with gypsum board.
- The installation must be in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Resilient channels used with SONOpan II must have a minimum thickness of 0.455 mm and a minimum corrosion resistance of G40.
- The packaging of each bundle of the product must be identified with:
- the name and logo of the manufacturer; and
- “CCMC 12419-R.”

Performance requirements
Acoustical performance
For acoustical tests, the product was installed in wall and floor/ceiling assemblies. The STC rating was established in accordance with ASTM E 413-10, “Classification for Rating Sound Insulation,” based on test results carried out in accordance with ASTM E 90-09, “Standard Test Method for Laboratory Measurement of Airborne Sound Transmission Loss of Building Partitions and Elements.” The ASTC was determined in accordance with ASTM E 336.
In addition, the manufacturer submitted floor/ceiling assemblies for optional testing to establish the impact insulation class (IIC). The IIC was established in accordance with ASTM E 989-06, “Standard Classification for Determination of Impact Insulation Class (IIC),” based on testing in accordance with ASTM E 492-09, “Standard Test Method for Laboratory Measurement of Impact Sound Transmission Through Floor-Ceiling Assemblies Using the Tapping Machine,” or ASTM E 1007-14, “Standard Test Method for Field Measurement of Tapping Machine Impact Sound Transmission Through Floor-Ceiling Assemblies and Associated Support Structures.”
