The above opinion(s) is/are based on the evaluation by the CCMC of technical evidence provided by the evaluation holder, and is bound by the stated conditions and limitations. For the benefit of the user, a summary of the technical information that forms the basis of this evaluation has been included.

Product information

Product name

InsulSafe® XC Wall Insulation System

Product description

The product is manufactured on the job site. It uses a spun-bound, polypropylene nonwoven fabric printed with the product name Optima®. The fabric is affixed (stapled or glued) to the face of the framing members. The insulation is pneumatically installed using a mineral fibre blowing machine with a hose attached that blows the insulation into the open wall cavity behind the fabric (see Figure 1). The thermal insulation product is CertainTeed Insulsafe® XC (see CCMC 13141-L).

This evaluation covers the use of the product in wood-frame construction using 38 mm × 89 mm studs placed at 406 mm on centre (o.c.), 38 mm × 140 mm studs placed at 406 mm o.c., or 38 mm × 140 mm studs placed at 610 mm o.c. The applied design density of the product must be 32 kg/m3 . The thermal insulation used is CertainTeed InsulSafe® XC loose-fill glass-fibre insulation, which is compliant with CAN/ULC-S702-09, “Standard for Mineral Fibre Thermal Insulation for Buildings.” The insulation is applied using a blowing machine that places the insulation in the wall cavity behind the attached netting. The interior and exterior walls should be finished in accordance with the NBC 2015 requirements.

  Conditions and limitations

The CCMC’s compliance opinion is bound by this product being used in accordance with the conditions and limitations set out below.

  • The design thermal resistance of the glass-fibre insulation is 29.1 m2·K/W. Table 1 indicates the coverage for installation in both 38 mm × 89 mm and 38 mm × 140 mm cavities.
Table 1. Coverage chart for the product

Cavity Height
Applied density (kg/m3) Number of cavities filled per 14.1-kg bag
2.58 89 (at 406 mm o.c.) 32 5.7
4.07 140 (at 406 mm o.c.) 32 3.6
4.07 140 (at 610 mm o.c.) 32 2.3
  • CertainTeed recommends that installers always follow the “InsulSafe® XC Installation Instruction Manual.” A training video in their “Right Way” series is also available.
  • The thermal insulation product must be delivered to the building site in unopened packages. The netting must bulge less than 13 mm beyond the stud to indicate a conforming installation that provides the necessary product density.
  • The insulation must be kept away from heat-emitting devices, such as recessed light fixtures, chimneys, and propane or natural gas sources, at a distance of 75 mm or the distance required by the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • The installation must be in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions and this Report.
  • When possible, the product label or package must be identified with the manufacturer’s name and logo and the phrase “CCMC 13272-R.”
