Product information

Product name

JM Spider®Plus Custom Insulation System

Product description

The product consists of a specially engineered glass-fibre loose-fill insulation, which is installed in framing cavities using a spray-in technique with a low flow, high pressure water mist. A standard blowing machine is combined with a high pressure water pump and nozzle to apply the product (see Figure 1). The nozzle can be set to deliver a flow with a maximum initial installed moisture content of 15%.

  Conditions and limitations

The CCMC’s compliance opinion is bound by this product being used in accordance with the conditions and limitations set out below.

  • The proprietary product is only sold to, and can only be installed by, insulation contractors who have been trained and certified by Johns Manville. The training process includes an introductory seminar, on-site installer training, installer certification, and ongoing assistance by Johns Manville. For every site where the product is installed, a record must be created showing site data, machine settings, installation quality measurements (to ensure density and quantity of material, and proper adhesive) and information on any problems and the resolution.
  • When the product is installed in an unconfined sloped space, such as an attic space over a sloped ceiling, the supporting slope must not be more than 4.5 in 12.
  • To avoid irritation to the skin, eyes, and throat, the installer is required to wear a mask during material installation along with other safety equipment as specified by Johns Manville.
  • The insulation must be kept at least 75 mm from heat-emitting devices such as recessed light fixtures, or at a distance required by the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • The insulation must be kept at least 50 mm from the sidewalls of chimneys and vents, or at a distance required by the local AHJ.
  • The lumber used in the wall framing must meet the requirements of Article, Moisture Content, of Division B of the NBC 2010, i.e., the moisture content of lumber must not be greater than 19% at the time of installation.
  • The product must be installed as per the coverage described in one of the following 2 tables.
